SAGA INTRODUCES DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN SCHOOL SPORTS CLUBS
Empowering Student-Athletes Through Leadership, Accountability, and Democratic ParticipationThe School Athletics and Games Association (SAGA) continues to redefine youth sports development in Sierra Leone with the introduction of its innovative Sports Leadership Scheme, a groundbreaking initiative designed to cultivate leadership, accountability, and civic responsibility among student-athletes.
As part of SAGA’s commitment to holistic youth development, participating schools are now conducting democratic presidential elections within their respective sports clubs. These elections provide student-athletes with the opportunity to actively participate in selecting their peers to serve as Student Sports Club Presidents and Executive Committee Members, creating a structured governance system within each school’s athletic program.The initiative goes beyond competition and athletic performance. It recognizes that sports provide one of the most powerful platforms for developing future leaders, decision-makers, and responsible citizens.
Building Leaders Beyond the Playing Field
Under the Sports Leadership Scheme, students campaign, present their visions, engage with fellow athletes, and participate in transparent voting processes that mirror real-world democratic systems. Once elected, Student Presidents and their executive teams assume responsibility for supporting the administration of sports club activities, coordinating with Physical Education departments, mobilizing student participation, and assisting in the organization of school-based sporting events and tournaments.
By placing students at the center of decision-making, SAGA is helping young people develop practical leadership skills that will serve them throughout their academic, professional, and personal lives.
