The School Athletics and Games Association (SAGA) successfully hosted a groundbreaking two-week Youth Basketball Development Camp, bringing together talented young athletes from 15 distinguished schools across Sierra Leone. The camp served as more than a basketball training program—it was a platform for leadership development, personal growth, and youth empowerment.
Featuring four National Division One basketball coaches alongside an internationally based Sierra Leonean Division One coach from England, the initiative provided participants with elite-level basketball instruction while instilling values that extend far beyond the court.

Elevating Basketball Excellence Through Elite Coaching
One of the defining highlights of the camp was the caliber of coaching expertise made available to participating student-athletes. Throughout the two-week program, athletes received intensive training in fundamental and advanced basketball techniques, tactical awareness, game intelligence, teamwork, and physical conditioning.
The presence of four National Division One coaches ensured that participants were exposed to professional coaching standards, while the involvement of a Sierra Leonean Division One coach based in England introduced an international perspective to player development. This unique blend of local and global expertise allowed athletes to experience modern training methodologies and gain valuable insights into pathways for growth within and beyond Sierra Leone.
The camp created an environment where young athletes were challenged to improve their skills, compete with discipline, and develop the confidence necessary to pursue excellence in basketball..
Beyond the Court: Building Leaders Through Sport

Recognizing that sports serve as a powerful vehicle for personal development, SAGA integrated leadership and life-skills education into the camp curriculum. Participants engaged in interactive sessions focused on discipline, teamwork, communication, decision-making, accountability, and goal setting.
These sessions were designed to reinforce the importance of becoming well-rounded student-athletes who excel academically, socially, and athletically. Through discussions, mentorship activities, and practical exercises, athletes learned how the values developed in sports can be applied in school, family life, and future careers.
The leadership component of the camp reflects SAGA’s commitment to nurturing responsible young citizens who can positively influence their communities and serve as role models among their peers.
“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing.“

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF GRACE
On day two of the SAGA basketball clinic, I walked onto the court terrified. I was shy, knew absolutely nothing about the game, and could barely dribble without losing the ball. Honestly, fear almost made me pack up and go home right then. But for some reason, I chose to stay.
Day by day, things started to click. I learned how to pass, how to defend, and how to shoot. But it became about way more than just basketball skills, I was learning discipline, confidence, and what it actually means to be part of a team.
The court became my classroom, and basketball just became my lifestyle.
Then came the moment that changed everything for me. Coach Zoe, looked me right in the eye and said, “Grace, I believe in you. You can do it.”
Those simple words gave me a massive wave of courage. By the end of the clinic, I wasn’t that clueless, intimidated girl anymore. I left that court confident, skilled, and completely determined. If Grace could rise above her doubts and find her confidence, you can do it too. Come join the movement. Your own transformation is waiting for you!
